Our minister, the Reverend Kathryn Rivera Torea, is a life-long Presbyterian, and a Northwest Ohio native.  She jokes that her life keeps bringing her back to I-75.  She was ordained as a Minister of Word and Sacrament in Maumee Valley Presbytery, in 2004, and has served churches in central Ohio and in the Hudson Valley in New York.  Pastor Katie joined us in January 2022.

As she looks back on her ministry and training thus far, she is grateful for her formation in feminism, African-American history, pastoral coaching, and adaptive change.  She thanks God for guiding her to extraordinary spiritual directors, to spend time working with the Spanish-speaking immigrant mothers of Rockland County, NY, and to friendship with the historically Native American Congregation of Brook Presbyterian Church.

Pastor Katie likes a good walk in the woods and is sort of obsessed with birds and clouds.  She loves to laugh, sing, dance, sit by a fire pit, and read novels.

Pastor Katie fell in love with 1st Presbyterian Church at first contact.  This congregation exudes welcome and acceptance.  Here at 1st Presbyterian, she believes that the Holy Spirit is urging the congregation to greater clarity and focus in purpose and mission.  As a Teaching Elder, she understands that her work is to equip the saints and empower the leaders of the congregation to provide and enact community ministry God has set for us in this time and place.  As a Teaching Elder, she also understands that her role is to nurture the congregation members’ discipleship to Jesus Christ.
