Sunday, August 9, 2020 to Sunday September 20, 2020

I’ve really enjoyed our series on Acts in Eastertide and then Compassion Camp this summer, and so for my last seven Sundays with you I’d like to do one final series.  I’d like to leave you with seven blessings–benedictions for your ministry as a congregation.  Each week, I’ll pair one of the seven marks of a vital congregation (from the denomination’s Matthew 25 initiative) with a Biblical story of blessing, as a way of blessing different aspects of your ministry and naming all that has been good about this opportunity I’ve had to serve alongside you.

This week, the story of blessing will come from Genesis 1:26-31: God creates and blesses humanity, and the theme will be lifelong discipleship formation. View The Worship Service Video - August 9, 2020

Sunday, August 2, 2020 – Communion SundayView The Worship Service Video - August 2, 2020

This is the last Sunday of Compassion Camp!

Compassion Camp defines compassion as, “I see your hurt.  I feel your hurt with you (empathy). I will work to ease your hurt.” This Sunday, Session Five will focus on Compassion with the World, using the commandments of Sabbath and Jubilee from Leviticus 25:1-17.  We’ll learn how compassion calls us to give rest to the land and work for justice for one another.

Communion will be served this Sunday.  You may use wine or juice and bread or crackers from home, or pick up elements in the church vestibule (they are available starting today, and will be through Sunday morning).  In addition to the bottles of juice and packs of saltines, we now also have individual “fellowship cups” containing a wafer and juice.  Please prepare the elements, your homes, and your hearts for the sacrament.

Please stay on the Zoom following the service, because at 11 a.m. coffee hour will feature a Community Conversation with a special guest speaker.  In conjunction with our Compassion Camp theme of Compassion with the World, Dr. Bob Clark-Phelps will join us to talk about the theological and environmental impacts of climate change.

This Sunday, we’ll continue with Compassion Camp, our at-home VBS!

Compassion Camp defines compassion as, “I see your hurt.  I feel your hurt with you (empathy). I will work to ease your hurt.” This Sunday, Session Four will focus on Compassion Along the Way, using the story Ruth, Naomi, and Orpah from Ruth 1:1-22.  We’ll learn how compassion helps us to be present with one another–and to realize that God is present with us.

If you wrote letters of encouragement, you can still drop them off in the mailbox in the vestibule!

This Sunday, we’ll continue with Compassion Camp, our at-home VBS!

Compassion Camp defines compassion as, “I see your hurt.  I feel your hurt with you (empathy). I will work to ease your hurt.” This Sunday, Session Three will focus on Compassion for Myself, using the story of the Greatest Commandment from Mark 12:28-31.  We’ll learn how compassion helps us love ourselves–something that can actually be pretty hard, for adults as well as kids.

If you wrote letters of encouragement, you can still drop them off in the mailbox in the vestibule!  We’ll collect the letters on Sunday.

This Sunday, we’ll kick off our first Sunday of Compassion Camp, our at-home VBS!  The Christian Ed team has been making preparations, and families will receive their packets this weekend.  Compassion Camp defines compassion as, “I see your hurt.  I feel your hurt with you (empathy). I will work to ease your hurt.”  Because this is a good lesson for people of ANY age, we’re all going to follow the stories of compassion camp together.  This Sunday, Session One will focus on Compassion at the Table, using the story of the father and the two brothers (which we might be familiar with as the Parable of the Prodigal Son) from Luke 15:11-32.

Sunday, June 28, 2020

The Synod of the Covenant (Rev. Chip Hardwick, Synod Executive) has prepared a Synod-wide worship service, with music, prayer, scripture and preaching contributed by Presbyterians throughout our region. The worship service offers a Sabbath to local worship leaders, tech people, and musicians, as well as a chance for us to connect to fellow Presbyterians with whom we wouldn’t otherwise get to worship. The worship video can be found below; feel free to tune in at our normal 10 a.m. Sunday time, or any time that is convenient for you. A bulletin is available to follow along.

I’ll be back in the sanctuary this Sunday.  Our texts this Sunday will be Jer. 20:7-13 and Matt 10:24-29. To put the Matthew text in context, you may also want to read the beginning of Matthew chapter 10.  This is Jesus’s second discourse (he has five in Matthew, the first being on the Sermon on the Mount).  This is the “ministry discourse”–Jesus’ account of what it’s like to share the news of the Gospel in extreme times.
